Summer is well-known for being the happiest season, as it’s packed with plenty of activities and fun things to do. But the summer can also bring unexpected feelings and triggers, so it’s important to be mindful of who you spend time with and the activities you participate in.
Below are three of the most common relapse triggers in the summer.
1. Traveling
Taking a vacation is a great way to relax and get away from the daily grind. It’s also a chance to reconnect with your family. However, getting out of your normal, structured environment and into a relaxing, carefree atmosphere can make it difficult to stay sober. This is especially the case if you stay at a resort where the alcohol flows freely.
If you’re planning to travel in recovery, make sure you choose a place where there are plenty of sober activities to enjoy – hiking, museums, surfing, daytime excursions, etc. Also, bring a sober friend or family member so that you have some support to lean on. You can also keep yourself busy by planning the group’s activities or cooking meals for everyone.
2. The Water
In the summer, the water is synonymous with drinking. Whether it’s the pool, beach, lake or river, many people enjoy sitting outdoors and having a few cold beers or cocktails. It’s a way to relax, especially with the water’s ability to calm our minds. If you used to drink near the water, being back in this environment can bring on cravings.
Because the water has calming effects, you might benefit from spending time at the beach or lake. However, you’ll have to be aware of the potential triggers. So pack your own cooler with fun drinks like Liquid Death. Also, find activities that you’ll enjoy, such as jet skiing or swimming with the kids. 3. More Free Time
